The Week Ahead

Dear Bronco Family,

Next week, both the School Council and the Parent Society will meet online on Wednesday, October 21.

The School Council meeting will run from 6:30–7:30 PM, followed by the Parent Society meeting from 7:30–8:30 PM. You will find the links for both meetings below in the calendar.

These two committees are very important to me, as they support me as principal, our staff, and our students in providing the best possible education at Senator Patrick Burns School. Once a month, I have the privilege of updating our School Council about teaching and learning and sharing our plans, including each year’s School Development Plan. Parents can then ask questions and share ideas about how they believe their children can best be supported at school.

I am grateful for the engagement of the parents who attend these meetings, as they help me find the best way forward for our students. If you have not attended a School Council meeting before, I would like to invite you to join us online on Wednesday. It is a great opportunity to connect with other parents and guardians and support our work.

Directly after the School Council meeting, we will meet with the Parent Society, which has a tremendous impact on our school through its fundraising efforts. Every year, the Parent Society supports areas of our school that we would not otherwise be able to finance with our very limited school budget. Through thoughtful fundraisers and casinos, they have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to make SPB a better school.

For the Parent Society to thrive, we need a few more parents to get involved, not only in fundraising but also in making decisions about how to spend the money to maximize its impact on student learning. I would especially love to welcome parents of students in the band program to join this group so they can fundraise specifically for our band program.

You will find the links to Wednesday’s online meetings below. I hope to see you at one—or even both—of the meetings that evening!

SPB Presents: Shrek the Musical Jr.!

Students interested in participating as actors or as behind-the-scenes technicians can attend an information meeting on October 29 (corrected from the previous newsletter) from 3:00–4:00 PM in Room 3.

• Auditions: Begin November 19 and will run for several afternoons after school.
• Rehearsals and Technical Theatre Club: Begin in the new year, with the first rehearsal on January 5.
• Performances: June 17 and 18 at the William Aberhart High School Theatre.

Design Studies Is Looking for Architecture Experts!

Sra. Van Eerden is looking to connect with SPB community members who are architects, work for architects, or have connections to architects to support our Design Studies – Architecture and Environmental Design Stream.

William Aberhart Feeder School Concert

Come and support the SPB Grade 9 Concert Band on Wednesday, October 28, as they perform at William Aberhart’s Feeder School Evening alongside our surrounding school community.

The concert begins at 6:30 PM and is open to friends and family who would like to join the audience. We look forward to seeing you there, and thank you for supporting our musicians!

Leadership 9 and Collingwood Partnership

Starting October 8, our Leadership 9 students will visit a Grade 1 and Grade 6 class at Collingwood School for Animación a la lectura—stories and interactive activities that make reading fun.

Our student leaders will build connections with their younger buddies while practising leadership through service.

Upcoming visit dates:

On visit days, Day 2 Leadership students must arrive at school by 8:00 AM.
