Physical Education and Wellness

Program Vision

The Physical Education program at Senator Patrick Burns School aims to empower students by fostering motivation, confidence, physical competence, and a deeper understanding of personal well-being. Through a range of physical activities, students are encouraged to take responsibility for both their physical and emotional health.

Program Message

The Physical Education department would like to warmly welcome everyone back for the new school year! For students in grades 6 to 9, Physical Education classes will be held daily from Monday to Thursday, with each session lasting 50 minutes.

Students are expected to arrive in a timely manner to class. They are provided with time to change before and after class in the changing rooms. Attendance is taken promptly at the start of class, and it is the responsibility of late-arriving students to inform their teacher.

Locker Rooms

The changing rooms will be provided for all students in grades 7-9; therefore, students will be required to change every day for PE. Grade 6 students are provided with a bronco bag at the start of the year to store their gym apparel and they are expected to bring this to and from gym class. Please note that we have a gender-neutral bathroom on site.

Locks are provided for each gym locker. If a lock is broken or lost, a replacement fee of $15 will be added to the student's online account.

Cellular devices and backpacks are not permitted in the changing rooms and must be kept in the student’s main locker throughout the school day.

Proper Footwear & Changing Expectations

In accordance with the Alberta Safety Guidelines for Physical Education, students are required to wear appropriate athletic footwear for class. Students are required to have a Bronco T-shirt and are permitted to bring their own athletic bottoms (pants or shorts). School athletic wear (shirts and shorts) is available for purchase at the start of the year from their PE teacher. Throughout the school year, students may purchase Bronco athletic attire from their PE teacher in the morning before classes start or at the end of the day after classes finish. Students are also expected to have appropriate clothing for outdoor participation even when the weather becomes colder.

Loaners are provided to students on a need’s basis upon conversation with their physical education teacher. Students are expected to have their own gym strip on a regular basis. Loaners must be returned directly to the student's PE teacher. If a loaner is lost or not returned, a replacement fee of $30 will be charged to the student's account.

Injury Policy

A dated and written note (hardcopy or electronically) from parents and/or guardians must be provided to their Physical Education teacher in advance when they are unable to participate in the planned activities so that alternative accommodations may be provided. For prolonged injuries, a new note from parents and/or guardians must be provided for each new unit.

Athletics

Spectator Expectations at Senator Patrick Burns' School Sporting and Athletic Events

As parents and spectators, your behavior plays a key role in shaping the experience of our athletes, officials, and everyone involved. To ensure a positive and supportive environment, we ask that you follow these guidelines during school sporting events:

  • Relieve, don’t increase pressure. Let them enjoy their experience without added stress.
  • Cheer for effort, not just outcomes. Celebrate the hard work and personal growth of the athletes, rather than focusing solely on outcomes.
  • Respect officials and coaches. Their decisions may not always align with your perspective, but it's important to show respect for their roles and maintain control.
  • Exhibit sportsmanship in all situations. Win with humility and lose with dignity. Your attitude, both in victory and defeat, is just as important as the final score.

Understand the consequences of inappropriate behavior. Senator Patrick Burns School reserves the right to remove any spectator who does not adhere to these expectations. An administrator will be present at all games to help with supervision. Let’s work together to create an environment where our student-athletes can thrive!

Thank you for your continued support of our athletes, coaches, and referees throughout the athletic season.
