TWA Oct. 23-27 | Consent for Social Media, Clubs, School Council, Sra. Zavala
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As of this week we have a four-person student leadership team who will lead the SPB Student Council as presidents. Georgia and Spencer, both Grade 9, will be Student Council Presidents and Matilda and Derek, both Grade 8, will be Vice Presidents. Please join me in congratulating them to their successful nominations. Sra. Allepuz and I will be supporting the students to move forward student voice at Senator Patrick Burns School this year. This is a milestone for our school, and I look forward to being challenged and supported by our fantastic students.

Student Permission for Social Media, Yearbook, etc.
This is a friendly reminder to please complete the electronic forms sent at the beginning of the school year. When we post on our school Instagram page, we refer to the "Consent to CBE Use of Student Info." If this states "no" or remains incomplete, we will either blur your child's image or place an object in front of their face. If you do not wish for your child to appear on our social media, I strongly encourage you to have a conversation with them about this. Often, students become upset when their faces are obscured or they are told they do not have permission. Thank you for your support in this matter! If you would like to receive updates and are not following our page, please visit: senatorpatrickburns.
Grade 6 – Beaver Computing Challenge
Students in Grade 6 are invited to register for The Beaver Computing Challenge (BCC) which will happen on November 6 at lunchtime in Room 31. The Beaver Computing Challenge (BCC) introduces computer science to students. It's designed to get students with little or no previous experience excited about computing. The challenge is an initiative from The Centre for Mathematics and Computing Education (University of Waterloo) to encourage students to develop skills in big-picture thinking and problem solving. The challenge is completed digitally, and no experience/practice is required. Students’ math teachers will provide details on how to sign up. Pre-registration will run between October 10th to 31st.

Teacher Introductions
This week, please meet our new Grade 8 teacher, Sra. Zavala.
My name is Mariana Zavala Olmedo. I am originally from Mexico. I moved to Canada when I was 19 years old. I have lived in Calgary for 15 years.
I completed my Bachelor of Education at the University of Calgary, which trained me in the STEM approach. I also attained two previous Arts Bachelors in General Humanities and Music. This is my 8th year as an educator, as I started teaching guitar and music theory. This experience as a music instructor helped me realize my passion to become an educator, to inspire and motivate students to learn, and to empower them to become the best version of themselves. I have also volunteered in a private day home, which has lent me the opportunity to learn the different stages of learning. I love the outdoors and spending time in nature. I played soccer and basketball in my formative middle and high school years. This is my first-year teaching at Senator Patrick Burns.
