TWA Dec. 11-15 | Homework Club, Personal Property, Morpheus Theatre, Teacher Laia Jarque, Mexican Pasada
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Last night we had our annual Winter Arts Showcase which allowed our Career Technology Foundations (CTF) students to shine. Sr. Melchin and the Grade 7,8 and 9 bands put on an amazing concert that showcased the amazing talents and skills of our students. Furthermore, we had exhibits from the art department, showcasing their works in various mediums and displays from Leadership, Design - Create – Build, Outdoor Education, Foods, Drama and amazing wooden products created in Construction. Thank you to everyone who came out to join the celebrations.
Speaking of arts: We would like to congratulate Lia Asencio Gutierrez in Grade 9, for winning the Art Gallery of Alberta “Dentons Purple Art Contest” in the under 18 category, with her painting of a dragon surrounded by bubbles titled “Innocence”. With her worked Lia wanted to “reflect on how in a world that wants to drive children to grow up faster than they should with all the news and social media as well as with the fast pace that life gets at her age, she wanted to stay a kid as long as possible.”

Grade 6 Beaver Computing Challenge Celebration
This past week, we celebrated Grade 6 students who participated in this year’s Beaver Computing Challenge (BCC). The BCC is an international math computing contest organized by the Centre of Education in Mathematics from the University of Waterloo. Senator Patrick Burns is proud to have hosted 32 students, of whom 10 received Distinction Awards for scoring in the top 25%. Congratulations and thank you for representing our school in the world of Mathematics.
Teacher Introductions
This week, please meet our new Full Year Temporary Teacher (FYTT) , Laia Jarque
¡Hola a todos!
My name is Laia Jarque Bascuñana and I'm a new member of the SPB community. I am from Barcelona (Spain) and I moved to Calgary last school year with all my family to work as a Spanish Science teacher in CBE schools. This is my first-year teaching at Senator Patrick Burns and also my 20th year as an educator, as I started as an Environmental Outdoor teacher. This first experience helped me realize my passion to become a Science teacher, to open the Nature knowledge door to the students, and to empower them to go further, growing and expanding themselves.
Reading, crafting, cooking and sharing meals with family and friends are on my favourite-things top list. I also love the outdoors and spending time in Nature: wild animals sightseeing, trail running, hiking, downhill and cross-country skiing and essentially anything that involves outdoors and nature contact. First Nations culture and history have also kept my attention since I landed on Canada. Learning their history and worldview are ones of my personal goals for this school year.”
Best regards, Laia.
