Dear Parents and Guardians
Thank you to Sra. Panrucker and the Grade 8 Team who took all Grade 8 students to Nose Hill Park on Wednesday for a special day of learning. Here is Sra. Panrucker’s report:
In the spirit of Truth and Reconciliation, Grade 8 students took the learning outside the classroom walls to visit Nose Hill Park and explore the question “In which ways do we make sure we foster a positive relationship with the land?” The students had the chance to explore many answers to this question through the lenses of Indigenous and scientific understanding.
Thanks to the knowledge shared by Indigenous Elders Gloria Manitopyes, Shanne Cunnigham and Educator Chrysta McPherson, the students enjoyed the time to reflect through storytelling about the land where we live, the names of the places we visit ordinarily and the vegetation that surrounds us.
Also, thanks to our parent community of experts, we had the opportunity to explore human-wildlife interactions. Dr. Amanda Melin, an expert in anthropology and genetics, and her associate graduate student James Tetreau brought exciting artifacts that kept our students engaged in thoughtful conversations about ways we share the land with other living creatures.
This was a unique experience, and we deeply appreciate the support of our parent community to continue learning outside the classrooms.
Have a great weekend.

Senator Patrick Burns Parent Association 2024-2025
Senator Patrick Burns has both a School Council and a Parent Association. The Parent Association is responsible for fundraising and distributing fundraising dollars for the school. All parents are welcome to attend our meetings. Meetings are typically held the third Wednesday of the month directly following the parent council meetings. They are virtual and usually short and sweet!
We are planning a great year to raise funds for ‘extras’ at the school. The money raised is used for items like physical education equipment, outdoor education equipment, classroom supports, and much more. We have been able to help with band instruments and the new basketball court. Your funds make a difference for the children at the school.
For the upcoming year we are planning:
- Apples (Sun Oka) in September,
- Spolumbo’s / Coco Brooks in the fall and spring
- Christmas Flowers (Growing Smiles) in late fall
- Spring Flowers (Growing Smiles) in the spring
If you would like to donate to the parent association, but do not wish to participate in fundraisers, it is possible to write a cheque instead. Cheques would be made payable to: Senator Patrick Burns Parent Association. If you require a tax receipt, you will have to contact the school directly to donate through the Education Matters program.
Our next Casino will not be until 2025 at the earliest. Volunteering at the casino has a huge impact on our school as it is our biggest fundraiser and only happens once every 1.5 to 2 years.
We need your help! We have several open positions in the Parent Association. This year we are seeking a Chair, Secretary, Board Members, Vice Chair, and extra help running the annual fundraisers. Please contact us if you are interested in making a big impact on your child’s school by helping with fundraising and deciding how our funds are allocated toward projects at the school - or attend our first meeting – September 18 following the Parent Council meeting.
More information on the Parent Association may be found at www.spbparentassociation.com or contact us at spbparentassociation@gmail.com
