Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week I would like to draw your attention to the work we are doing around Wellness at SPB. Please have a look at the post about the latest Student Wellness Challenge organized by Sra. Albertazzi who is leading wellness awareness and activities for staff and students in our school this year. Student Wellness Challenges

With the year in full swing, the busyness of each day can impact the wellness of students. With the goal of helping them keep their wellness in mind, students are invited to participate in our House Challenges to learn new things about themselves and strategies to strengthen their wellness skills. To participate, students simply complete the challenge related to their house, on their own time. When the challenge is complete, they can drop by room 31 or email their completed challenge to ibalbertazzi@cbe.ab.ca to get an extra 10 points for their house.

House of Liyikitapiiyi (Fearlessness)

House of Generosity

Your challenge this month is to create a vision board to clarify what your go-to self-care will look like this year.

Check out THIS DOCUMENT to get you started.

Your challenge is to watch this video: “Your body language may shape who you are”.  Watch the first 8 minutes with the volume off, then turn on the volume.

Write point form what you notice about the speaker and what she is showing when the volume is off, and then what do you notice about you when the volume is on.

House of Amistad (Friendship)

House of Rêveur (Visionaries)

Your challenge is to find an emotion you don’t know much about. Learn about that emotion and create something to share with others. It could be a poster, slideshow, poem, etc.

You can find the emotion wheel HERE

Your challenge this month is to go to THIS WEBSITE to learn about famous failures

What do these people respond to failure? Write, record, or create something to summarize what you learned from these famous people

Individualized Program Plans (IPPs)

If your child has an Individualized Program Plan (IPP), his or her homeroom teacher will be their key IPP teacher.  Homeroom teachers have reached out to parents/guardians recently in order to gather the information needed to write the first draft of IPPs.  If you have not heard from your child’s homeroom teacher with regards to your child’s IPP, please contact him or her directly as soon as possible.  IPPs will be shared with parents/guardians on Friday, October 11.

School Conferences Thursday and Friday October 24 + 25, 2024

We are excited to invite you to our upcoming Parent-Teacher Conferences where you’ll have the opportunity to connect with your child’s teachers and discuss their progress, strengths, and areas for growth. These conferences are a valuable time to share insights, ask questions, and work together to support your child’s learning and development. We believe that collaboration between home and school is key to fostering a positive and successful educational experience.

Parents are welcome to book a 10-minute conference time with each of their child's teachers. The Thursday October 24 conferences will be held in person from 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm at Senator Patrick Burns School at 2155 Chilcotin Road NW, Calgary AB. Online conferences will be held online on Friday, October 25 from 8:30 am to 2 pm. Conference booking will open to parents on Tuesday, October 15.

Senator Patrick Burns Parent Association 2024-2025

Senator Patrick Burns has both a Parent Council and a Parent Association. The Parent Association is responsible for fundraising and distributing fundraising dollars for the school. All parents are welcome to attend our meetings. Meetings are typically held the third Wednesday of the month directly following the parent council meetings. They are virtual and usually short and sweet!

We are planning a great year to raise funds for ‘extras’ at the school. The money raised is used for items like physical education equipment, outdoor education equipment, classroom supports, and much more. We have been able to help with band instruments and the new basketball court. Your funds make a difference for the children at the school.

We are planning:

  • Spolumbo’s / Coco Brooks in the fall and spring
  • Christmas Flowers (Growing Smiles) in late fall
  • Spring Flowers (Growing Smiles) in the spring

If you would like to donate to the parent association, but do not wish to participate in fundraisers, it is possible to write a cheque instead. Cheques would be made payable to: Senator Patrick Burns Parent Association.  If you require a tax receipt, you will have to contact the school directly to donate through the Education Matters program.

Our next Casino will not be until 2025 at the earliest. Volunteering at the casino has a huge impact on our school as it is our biggest fundraiser and only happens once every 1.5 to 2 years.
