Sept. 18-22 | School Council Meeting, Meet the Teacher, Spanish Classes for Parent, Orange Shirt Day Event

Dear Parents/Guardians

This week we had Paul Davis speaking to all our students about internet and social media safety. The presentations were engaging and provided many eye-opening moments for students. On Monday evening, Paul spoke to about 100 parents about the dangers of social media and apps. Thank you to the Parent Association for making these important events possible.

Last Saturday, our robotics team attended their season launch at Telus Sparks. Our two SPB Robotic teams are excited about this year’s challenge and we are delighted that the Calgary Flames Alumni will be sponsoring our Girls Robotics Team for the next two seasons. We were just presented with the funding for this year and the team is ready to go. A big thank you to the Calgary Flames Alumni. https://www.nhl.com/flames/video/important-assist-342902714

Next week, I will be joining the Grade 9 Outdoor Ed Trip to Bamfield so I will not be able to meet you at the Meet the Teacher Evening on Thursday. Assistant Principal Sra. Mandin will be available during my absence.

Have a great weekend.

Chinook Learning Services | Continuing Education | Spanish for Parents - Level 1 | Fall 2023

Chinook Learning Services offers courses specifically designed for parents and caregivers of CBE Spanish Bilingual students. For Fall 2023, Chinook Learning Services is once again offering Spanish for Parents – Level 1 classes. This eight-week course will help parents of bilingual students learn or refresh their Spanish language skills, build their network of bilingual parents and support their children’s learning at home.

This course would also be beneficial for any Support Staff who are interested in learning along with parents!

Invite | National Day for Truth and Reconciliation & Orange Shirt Day Event - Sept. 30

CBE students, staff and their families and friends are invited to join an event being hosted by the City of Calgary in partnership with the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District. The third annual ceremonial opening is taking place on Sept. 30 from 9-10:30 a.m. at Fort Calgary (750 9th Ave SE). This year's gathering will include a smudge tent, in-person Indigenous speakers and performers, an aerial salute ceremony, and other events. The events will also include an intertribal dance demonstration featuring Indigenous students from the CBE and CCSD. Participants are encouraged to wear orange.

Following the YYC, CBE & CCSD event, all are invited to join the Pokaiks – The Children Commemorative Annual Walk and Gathering 2023. The walk will begin at 11 a.m. at City Hall (15-minute walk from Fort Calgary or 2-minute drive) and continue to Shaw Millenium Park (30-minute walk). The walk will be followed by drumming/dancing, Indigenous community speakers, artisan booths, and food sales.

Schools are invited to share this invitation with their school communities.

Teacher Introductions

Over the next few weeks, we will have new teachers introduce themselves in the Week Ahead email. This week, please meet our new Grade 8 teacher, Macy Koontz.

Estimadas familias de SPB,

I feel very fortunate to be joining the SPB family as a Grade 8 Humanities Teacher. I have loved exploring language and culture for as long as I can remember. I chose to get my first-degree Cultural Anthropology with a minor in Spanish at the University of Texas, in Austin. Right after graduation, I flew to Spain for two years to teach in a program abroad. It was an incredible experience and fueled my passion for learning and travel! After receiving my Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Calgary, I taught at a Canadian Private School in Guadalajara, Mexico for three years. I had the most wonderful time and was able to make great connections with the community. I believe that making connections through community (parents, teachers, administration, staff, etc.) leads to a sturdier support system for students and further allows them to feel safe in the classroom. I hope to create a classroom community that is based on empathy, understanding, and a desire to learn and grow.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy taking my dog on hikes, researching for our next family vacation, reading for my book club, and trying new recipes.

Thank you to the SPB community for all of the support and the warmest of welcomes! I am looking forward to the year to come and am very excited to be a part of the team!

Saludos cordiales,

Sra. Macy Koontz
