Oct. 9-13 | Thanksgiving, Beaver Computing Challenge, Homework Club, Cross Country, IPPs, Spanish for Parents, School Council, Webinar
Dear Parents and Guardians,
This week I had the pleasure of attending many sports events at SPB. After four very successful weeks of cross country meets, the students celebrated their successes with a party this week, the soccer boys had two back-to-back wins, the girls’ soccer team continued their unbeaten run und our basketball teams finally started competing after practicing for the last weeks. SPB teams endeavor to give as many students as possible a chance to be active and to compete and teams like cross country allow all students who want to participate to do just that. The soccer teams have students from grade 6-9 competing and the girls’ basketball teams are back to both junior and senior teams. Thank you to all our teachers and community coaches who make these many opportunities possible and thank you to all parents who patiently wait before and after school to drop off or pick up their children. As principal, I enjoy seeing as many of our students practicing and competing and if a match ends with a SPB win - that is an extra bonus.
Wishing you all a happy Thanksgiving. Sr. Ludwigsen

Grade 6 – Beaver Computing Challenge
Students in Grade 6 are invited to register for The Beaver Computing Challenge (BCC) which will happen on November 6 at lunchtime in Room 31. The Beaver Computing Challenge (BCC) introduces computer science to students. It's designed to get students with little or no previous experience excited about computing. The challenge is an initiative from The Centre for Mathematics and Computing Education (University of Waterloo) to encourage students to develop skills in big-picture thinking and problem solving. The challenge is completed digitally, and no experience/practice is required. Students’ math teachers will provide details on how to sign up. Pre-registration will run between October 10 to 31.
Homework Club
Homework club will begin Monday, Oct. 2 from 3:05-4:05pm in the Learning Commons. Monday’s club will be a Humanities focus and Wednesdays and Thursdays will be a Math/Science focus. All are welcome to attend to receive extra help or to work on homework. We are currently looking for grade 8 and 9 students to work with students on a casual basis at Homework Club or to tutor students. If you are interested, please fill in the following form.
Cross Country Opportunity
If you are interested in extending your running opportunities, we would like to encourage you to sign up to participate in the Mochas & Marshmallows 3km Fun Run organized through RNR. This is not a school sponsored event, but cross- country coaches will be there to cheer students on. For more information, or to register to participate go to https://www.rnrpremierevents.com/mochas-and-marshmallows-kids
If you have any questions, and/or you register for the race, please contact Maria Aguilera Webb at mswebb@cbe.ab.ca so that we know how many runners to expect. Please note that parents will be responsible for supervising their runners and SPB staff will only be there to cheer runners on.
Individual Program Plans (IPPs)
If your child has an IPP, their homeroom teacher will be the key IPP teacher this year. If you have not yet heard from your child's homeroom teacher regarding their IPP, please contact them directly in order to collaborate on the contents of this year's IPP for your child. Your child's key IPP teacher will share the first draft of your child's IPP with you in mid-October.

Teacher Introductions
This week, please meet our new Grade 6 teacher, Srta. Poulsom
¡Hola Todats!
My name is Charlotte Poulsom AKA Srta. Poulsom, and I am so excited to be joining the team this year! I am an alumnus of SPB, and I am so excited to foster the same passion for the Spanish language and culture(s) in my students that I developed during my time here. Thanks, in large part to my time in the program, I have spent many months traveling and exploring new places. I have already visited 18 countries, and I am eager to continue adding to my list! In addition to language studies, I am extremely passionate about the arts, which led me to complete my first degree at Alberta University of the Arts. Creativity will always make up a huge part of my artistic and teaching practices. When I am not at school, you can find me writing, playing the fiddle, blowing glass, or spending time with my dog Poppy. I am so looking forward to the year ahead with you all and thank you for welcoming me into the community with open arms and hearts!

Child and Youth Well-Being:
A Webinar Series for Parents and Guardians
CBE educators believe that parents and guardians can inspire their kids to make healthy lifestyle choices and increase protective factors – in order to do so, they need the right tools and information.
Well-being is a precondition for learning. As our understanding of student well-being continues to evolve, it is important for those that support children and youth to stay up to date on the same information so everyone can support student success.
The intention of the series is to advance student well-being by raising family and caregiver’s understanding of a variety of health-related topics.
Thank you for your time and consideration to join us.
Sincerely,
Harald Ludwigsen
