Oct. 2-6 | Truth and Reconciliation, Homework Club, Cross Country, IPPs, Spanish for Parents, Walk to School Week, School Council Meetings, Teacher Introduction

Dear Parents/Guardians

This is what learning can look like at SPB. To mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, originally and still colloquially known as Orange Shirt Day, a Canadian holiday to recognize the legacy of the Canadian Indian residential school system, all SPB Grade 8 students went to the Medicine Wheel and labyrinth on Nose Hill on Thursday. They were welcomed by Diversity & Learning Support Advisor Crystal McPherson as well as Elders Gloria Manitopyes and Shane Cunningham who were sharing teachings about nature, Indigenous knowledge and the medicine wheel on top of Nose Hill.

Thank you to Sra. Panrucker and the Grade 8 Team for making this wonderful learning opportunity for our students. All other grade groups used opportunities during this week to learn about Indigenous Histories in Canada and the calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Committee.

Maybe you will find time to reflect on these topics during this long weekend and today’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Teacher Introductions

This week, please meet our new Grade 6 teacher, Srta. Sánchez

Dear SPB School Community,
My name is Nerea Sánchez, and I am both delighted and honoured to be a part of the SPB school community. Originally from the vibrant and picturesque land of Basque Country, in the north of Spain, I began my Canadian adventure more than two years ago, and it's been an incredible journey.

I am genuinely overjoyed to be a part of this remarkable school and to share my Spanish heritage, knowledge, and experiences with all our wonderful students. I have been dedicated to the field of Bilingual Education since 2008. My academic journey has been shaped by my time in San Sebastian and Bilbao (Basque Country, Spain). I had the option to keep professionally growing in my hometown, Vitoria-Gasteiz, until in 2014, I decided to move abroad to work as a teacher in Colorado (USA) and volunteer in Brisbane (Australia) before deciding to move to Canada. My goal is to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment that caters to the unique needs of every student.

Besides the professional area, I am a passionate traveller who likes to spend her free time embracing the culture, people and food of the country visited. Also, I love doing sports, such as skiing and Triathlon.

Looking forward to an exciting and insightful school year! Best regards,

Nerea Sánchez
