Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week, our volleyball teams played their semifinals. Unfortunately, the boys’ teams were unlucky and missed out on their finals. Both girls’ teams, however, moved on to their finals. We wish them the best of luck in their games on Tuesday – unfortunately no fans or spectators are allowed due to the CUPE strike. We were also informed that all further athletics competitions will come to a stop once the volleyball season will have ended. This means that there will be no badminton or track and field season this year unless the strike situation changes (see further information below).

So far, the impact of the strike on SPB has been minimal and I want to thank all SPB staff and students for their understanding during these challenging times.

Athletics Events for the Remainder of the 2024-2025 School Year

To provide clarity for the remainder of the CUPE labour actions and how it impacts athletics at SPB for the remainder of the 2024-2025 school year:

  • Volleyball season ends Sunday, March 23, 2025.
  • Badminton season is postponed until further notice.
    • This means:
      • No try-outs.
      • No practices.
      • No games between schools (exhibition included).
      • No tournaments.
  • Track & Field season is postponed until further notice.
    • This means:
      • No try-outs.
      • No practices.
      • No competitions between schools.
      • No track meets.

Why are CSHSAA (High Schools) athletics continuing and not CMLSAA (Middle Schools)?

High school athletics play in a joint association with CCSD.  If the CBE was to withdraw from CSHSAA it would affect the entire association financially and optically.  They also are participants in ASAA.

If/when the CUPE labour action ceases – a plan to resume CMLSAA athletics will be communicated to schools.

Parent Teacher Conferences Online

We would like to inform you that our upcoming school conferences will be held online due to the CUPE strike. The conferences will take place on Thursday, March 20 from 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm and Friday, March 21 from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm.

Parents will be able to begin booking appointments starting Monday, March 10 at 8:00 am, with bookings closing on March 20 at 1:00 pm. After that time, please contact the main office to inquire about any available appointment slots.

Each interview will last 10 minutes and offers a great opportunity for parents and guardians to connect with their child's teacher. Once your appointment is confirmed, a link for the online interview will be sent to you. We look forward to seeing you virtually during these important meetings.

Lost Keys

If you are missing a set of house keys, the office seems to have acquired multiple sets. Please stop by and have a look if your student misplaced theirs.

  • Volleyball and drama rehearsal will have to finish by 4:30 pm the latest and students will have to leave the building immediately after.

🌎Eco Broncos Update 🌎

At SPB, we take great pride in our environmental efforts, and we are excited to share that our school is currently Bronze Certified with EcoSchools Canada!

What is EcoSchools?

EcoSchools is a national environmental certification program that supports and recognizes schools for their sustainability initiatives. With a focus on waste reduction, energy conservation, nature and biodiversity, and climate action, EcoSchools helps students and staff work together to build a greener future.

Our Eco Broncos in Action

SPB is especially proud to be the only school in Calgary with the most comprehensive waste sorting system for plastic bags. Did you know that single plastic bags cannot be recycled through regular streams? Thanks to our dedicated Eco Broncos and community, last year we successfully diverted over 150 kg of plastic bags from the landfill, ensuring they were properly recycled instead.

Calling All Eco Leaders!

We are always looking for energetic and passionate students to join our Eco Broncos club. We meet every Thursday at lunchtime in the Learning Commons, and all students are welcome to be part of our mission to make SPB greener!

How You Can Help

We encourage our entire SPB community to join us in small, impactful changes — like reusing plastic sandwich, treat, or Ziploc bags until the end of their life. Every action counts!

Lunch Kit Tip of the Week

Stay tuned — each week, we’ll be sharing a helpful Lunch Kit Tip to inspire even more eco-friendly habits at home and at school. Together, we can make a difference! 💚

Request for Donations of Climbing Holds

We are excited to announce that we are planning to reset the walls in our climbing gym. To provide even more opportunities for our students, we aim to have two routes per wall. However, in order to achieve this, we are in need of additional climbing holds.

If you have any climbing holds (rocks) at home that you would be willing to donate to the school, we would greatly appreciate it. Your contribution will help us enhance the climbing experience for all students.

Thank you for your support, and please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Best regards,

Physical Education Team
