Dear Parents and Guardians,
I want to take this opportunity to inform you around the CBE response to Air Quality Alerts which supports our students at SPB:
During smoky conditions, the CBE uses the Environment Canada air quality health index (AQHI) to determine when to reconsider outdoor activities and implement other measures to support the health and safety of students and staff. The provincial government also reports the AQHI by community.
In accordance with the CBE Outdoor Activities Guidelines, if the AQHI remains at 7 or above, schools are asked to consider postponing or cancelling outside activities during lunch and recess or limit the level of exertion if outside activities proceed. At that level Alberta Health Services recommends reducing the levels of outdoor physical activity to decrease the inhalation of airborne pollutants as individuals may experience temporary irritation of eyes and throat and possibly shortness of breath.
Below are the recommended restrictions for outdoor activities related to air quality:
AQHI | CBE Response | |
1-3 | Low heath risk | Continue as normal. |
4-6 | Moderate health risk | Consider restricting levels of activities. Reduce the intensity and duration of any strenuous activities. Provide resting periods. Consider indoor recess for students with health issues that maybe impacted by air quality. |
7-10 | High health risk | Reduce or reschedule strenuous activities outdoors. Consider indoor recess and lunch supervision for all students. |
Above 10 | Very high health risk | Avoid strenuous activities outdoors. Consider indoor recess and lunch supervision for all students. |
SPB also works closely with our facility operator to monitor the air quality conditions in their buildings. Facility operators are in the best position to monitor and manage school ventilation systems and have access to central resources should any issues be identified. They are able to adjust centrally automated heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) to minimize fresh air exchange until the air quality advisory is lifted. For schools with HVAC systems that are not centrally controlled, facility operators will manually adjust the system to minimize fresh air exchange. Please note that CBE facility operators are qualified 5th Class Power Engineers and are well trained in the operation of the school building systems.
We know these types of conditions impact every family differently. If you make the decision that your child will not be attending classes, please ensure you contact our attendance line to report the absence.

Spring Career and Technology (CTF) Showcase 2025
I want to take a moment to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the SPB students in Photography and Construction who participated in the CTF Spring Showcase 2025. From June 5 to June 13, students from across the CBE came together to highlight their talents and creative achievements. The opening evening was a wonderful gathering of families, educators, and community members, all united to celebrate the impressive culmination of learning fostered by the Career and Technology Foundations (CTF) curriculum.
The CTF Spring Showcase is more than just an event; it’s a valuable opportunity for students to reflect on their personal growth, share their accomplishments, and nurture their confidence through meaningful dialogues and joyful celebrations. It enables the CBE community to witness firsthand the incredible power of creativity in education and emphasizes the vital importance of providing students with the chance to explore their passions. Your hard work and dedication truly shine through, and I am so proud of each and every one of you! Sra. Herrera
Art and Photography students:
Dear art and photography students and families,
I hope this message finds you well. As we prepare for the upcoming summer renovations in the art room, I want to gently remind you to take your artwork home at the end of the term. I truly understand how much time and effort you've poured into your projects, and it’s important to me that you have the chance to keep them. Unfortunately, we won't have the space to store anything that is left behind, and it would be disheartening for those pieces to be disposed of.
Thank you for your understanding, and I appreciate your cooperation during this transition. The remaining items will be disposed after June 25. Wishing you all a wonderful conclusion to the term! Sra. Herrera
Art Club: done for the year
As we wrap up the year, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the students who participated in the art club every Monday at lunch. Your enthusiasm and creativity have made each session special, and it's been a pleasure to share this journey with you. Thank you for being a part of our community! Sra. Herrera
Lost and found
Please remind your child to check the lost and found if they are missing any belongings. The remaining items will be donated after June 25.
Clothing and shoe items from the changing rooms have been placed into temporary lost and found for PE in front of the Main Office. Please have your child check for any missing items prior to summer break!
Gym Locker Clean-Out & Gym Clothing Donations
Gym locker clean-out is scheduled for Friday, June 13 during PE classes. After this date, students will not be able to access the changing rooms. If your child has any gym clothing they no longer need, donations can be made to the PE office. Thank you for your support!
Overdue Books
As the end of the school year approaches, please be reminded that all overdue books must be returned to the Learning Commons as soon as possible. To avoid any charges being added to your account, please ensure that all books are returned by June 20.
Thank you for your cooperation. Let’s finish the school year strong!
IPPs
IPPs will be shared with parents/guardians by homeroom teachers on Wednesday, June 18. If you have questions regarding the contents of your child’s IPP, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher directly. Please sign and return the signature page of your child’s IPP to your child’s homeroom teacher as soon as possible. Thank you!
Eco Broncos Update - SPB Achieves Platinum EcoSchool Certification!
We are thrilled to share the exciting news that SPB has officially been certified as a Platinum EcoSchool—the highest level of recognition for environmental leadership in schools! This incredible accomplishment marks a huge leap forward from our bronze status last year and is the result of hard work, dedication, and teamwork across our entire school community.
A special thank-you goes out to our amazing students, staff, and especially to the families of all our Broncos. Your support, participation, and commitment to our sustainability efforts—especially around waste management—helped us reach this milestone. Whether it was packing waste-free lunches, learning to sort your waste, joining in Earth Week activities, or simply encouraging mindful habits at home, you’ve played a vital role.
We’re also proud to share that SPB is the only junior high school in the city to achieve Platinum status this year! Let’s keep the momentum going and continue working together to reduce our environmental impact.
We are all EcoBroncos—thank you for being part of this journey!
