Dear Parents and Guardians

This week, our Grade 6 students’ artwork is on display downtown in the CBE Education Centre. Why don’t you drop in when you are in the area? The exhibition will be open to the public until June 14. Here is the introduction by our amazing resident artist extraordinaire and Grade 6-9 Art teacher, Sra. Herrera:

Mis Tres Espíritus Animales

Mis Tres Espíritus Animales (My Three animal Spirits) is a group exhibition of a collection of Grade 6 student artwork from Senator Patrick Burns School. The masks were created in Art class during their “Mis Tres Espíritus Animales” assignment where the students learned about how different cultures around the world used animals as symbols for superhuman characteristics. The students were encouraged to research at least three animals/insects that they consider important for them or their community. They then endeavoured to create a “transformation mask”, which are used in many cultures around the world to symbolically transform the creator and wearer into a superhuman entity by adopting the abilities of the animal. The students created their transformation masks out of Papier mâché, acrylic markers and paints. Afterwards, they “transformed” themselves in front of their peers physically by wearing the mask and taking on the characteristics of the animal through movement and sound. The work was created and performed in Spanish, as Senator Patrick Burns is a Spanish Bilingual school.

Have a great weekend. Sr. Ludwigsen, Principal
