Dear Parents/Guardians,
As the City of Calgary continues to grow, the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) is committed to providing strong and stable learning environments that keep peers together, while working to alleviate enrolment pressures.
Why am I receiving this notice?
According to CBE records, you live in the Ambleridge or Moraine community (including Ambleton and Starling), and your child(ren) or current school may be impacted by the designation changes outlined in this notice.
What are the Elementary School changes?
Beginning for the 2026-27 school year, elementary students living in Ambleridge and Moraine will be re-designated from Hidden Valley School to Simons Valley School (Map 1) for Regular Program, this means:
- All students, in kindergarten to Grade 5, including siblings, will automatically be designated to Simons Valley School.
- Due to limited capacity, there is no option to stay at Hidden Valley outside the revised attendance area.
Note: for the 2027-28 school year and beyond Simons Valley School will include Grade 6 for the Ambleridge and Moraine Communities only. Other designated communities will move to their middle school for Grade 6.
Simons Valley School is located at 375 Sandarac Dr NW.
What are the Middle School changes?
Beginning in the 2027-28 school year, middle school students living in Ambleridge and Moraine will be re-designated from Valley Creek School to Senator Patrick Burns School (Map 2) for Regular Program, this means:
- All new CBE registrations in Grades 7 to 9 including siblings will be designated to Senator Patrick Burns School.
- All Grade 6 and 7 students attending Valley Creek School in the 2026-27 school year will be re-designated to Senator Patrick Burns School for Grades 7 and 8.
- Grades 8 students at Valley Creek School in the 2026-27 school year can choose to stay until finishing Grade 9, or transfer to Senator Patrick Burns School.
Note: Grade 8 students choosing to transfer to Senator Patrick Burns for Grade 9 will attend three different schools in three years.
Senator Patrick Burns School is located at 2155 Chilcotin Rd NW.
The table below outlines the changes for Ambleridge and Moraine:
Year | K | Gr1 | Gr2 | Gr3 | Gr4 | Gr5 | Gr6 | Gr7 | Gr8 | Gr9 |
2025 | Hidden Valley | Valley Creek
2026 | Simons Valley | Valley Creek
2027 | Simons Valley | Sen. Patrick Burns | SPB/VC
2028+ | Simons Valley | Sen. Patrick Burns
What is impacting these changes?
The CBE must extensively evaluate and plan to accommodate growth and provide additional spaces. This often means one capacity concern can affect multiple schools and communities.
The ongoing growth of developing communities, such as Ambleridge and Moraine, adds pressure to surrounding areas. The current designated schools do not have capacity to accommodate this growth. As a result, adjustments outlined in this notice, along with changes in northwest communities and schools, are being made to support a more stable and long-term enrolment plan.
How do I register for school next year?
Any student new to the CBE is required to register online by visiting our New Student Registration page. Registration for the 2026-27 school year starts January 2026.
Elementary students living in the Ambleridge and Moraine communities will automatically be transferred to Simons Valley School for the 2026-27 school year. No action is required.
Jr. High School students entering Grades 7 to 8 for the 2027-28 school year will automatically be designated to the Senator Patrick Burns. No action is required.
Students entering Grade 9 for the 2027-28 school year wanting to remain at Valley Creek, must inform their current principal by March 12, 2027.
How will students get to school?
Students entering Grade 9 in 2027-28 designated to Senator Patrick Burns School but choose to remain at Valley Creek School are eligible for transportation services to Valley Creek for that school year only.
CBE students are eligible for transportation to their designated school if they live beyond the walk zone, but within the attendance area. Please note transportation for middle and junior high school students can include yellow school bus service or Calgary Transit. Please visit the CBE Busing & Transportation page for more information. Service levels and fees will be confirmed by May 2026.
