Dear Bronco Family,
This week, extra-curricular activities and tryouts started at SPB. We had scores of students trying out for the soccer and basketball teams and over 80 students turn up for the first cross country practice on Wednesday and the race at Vista Heights School in the northeast yesterday. Luckily the rain stopped just in time for us to enjoy perfect running conditions and many personal successes. Congratulations to everyone who enjoyed their run and a big thank you to all the SPB staff who made this start to our season go so smoothly.
Every week, our assistant principal and I meet with the students whose birthday it is in that week to acknowledge them, celebrate their happy day and talk to them about their school experience, what makes them feel safe and how they think we could improve the school even more. These meetings are a daily source of joy for me as we receive so much feedback on the amazing work all staff do here at SPB every day and it allows us to get to know all our students. (In case you are wondering how we celebrate those students who have their birthday in July and August or during holidays – we meet with before the holidays, e.g. we celebrate July’s birthdays in May and August’s birthdays in June.) If, for any reason, you do not want you child to take part in these meetings, please send us an email and we will respect your wishes.
Finally, the Calgary Board of Education invites all parents and guardians to join a live online series on supporting child and youth well-being. The series is hosted by the Recovery Alberta Community Education Service (CES) Program in collaboration with local experts from the Calgary community. Attached to this email is a poster with sessions designed to provide families with knowledge, tools, and strategies to help navigate the challenges and opportunities of raising children and teens today. Along with the poster, additional session details are available on this website: Child and Youth Well-Being Family and Caregiver Series.
Have a wonderful weekend.

Youth Theatre Canada Audition Tour – September 18
Youth Theatre Canada will be conducting auditions for their fall production, "The Lost World" (based on the novel that inspired Jurassic Park) at Senator Patrick Burns on Friday, September 18. This extra-curricular program is an excellent experience for young people who are interested in acting, and students in grades 7-9 are welcome to join in.
The group audition will take place after school on September 18 at 12:55 pm. No experience or preparation is necessary. If you or your child would like further information, please speak to Sra. Newburn (pcnewburn@cbe.ab.ca) and she can provide a permission form and more details.
Band Updates and Rehearsals
Hello Band Families! Please take a look at the following updates regarding rehearsal start up and clinician dates coming up in October.
Note: A few times a year, we invite clinicians to come work with the band students in small groups. This is a great way to support specific instrument technique and sound in a more on-on-one setting. Please note that clinician sessions take place on regular rehearsal days, but the times are longer than regular rehearsal, running until 4:45pm. It is expected all students attend these sessions. Please reach out to chapoulsom@cbe.ab.ca with any further questions.
Grade 7:
· Clinicians: Monday October 5th from 3:15-4:45 pm
· Weekly Rehearsals: Mondays from 3-4 pm starting October 19th.
Grade 8:
· Clinicians: Monday October 6th from 3:15-4:45 pm
· Weekly Rehearsals: Tuesdays from 3-4 pm starting October 20th.
Grade 9:
· Clinicians: Wednesday October 21st from 3:15-4:45 pm
· Weekly Rehearsals: Tuesdays from 3-4 pm starting October 7th.
Thank you, and looking forward to another great year at SPB!
Sra. Poulsom
