Senator Patrick Burns School Big Cheque

The Week Ahead June 15-19, 2026

Dear Bronco Family,

We are delighted to share with you that SPB has received a check over $50,000 to be spent on our Learning Commons (library) over the next three years. Our amazing librarian, Sra. Barillas together with Sra. Villatoro applied to the Indigo – Love of Reading Foundation in the fall of last year and last week Senator Patrick Burns school received a large (!) cheque which was presented to students of SPB, represented by our three Student Council Presidents, Sra. Barillas and me. As with all major decisions, we will consult with our students first on how we can best utilize the money moving forward. Our students have already identified that they would like more books for Grade 9 students as we already have many books for younger readers due to us having had Grade 5 and 6 students in the past. There will also be the opportunity to spend some of the money on furniture for the Learning Commons. We would like to thank the general manager of the Indigo – Crowfoot branch, Colin Castillo, for visiting our school with two of his colleagues and presenting us with this generous cheque.

Happy reading!

Class Size Reduction Grant

We are pleased to inform you that our school has been allocated two additional teaching position(s) for the 2026–27 school year through the Government of Alberta’s Class Size Reduction Grant.

This grant funds teaching positions that support improved learning conditions in kindergarten to Grade 9 classrooms.

This funding is specifically intended to help reduce class sizes in core subject areas (English Language Arts, Spanish Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies), with priority given to schools experiencing the greatest class size pressures.

This decision was made using system-wide data that considers:

  • The number of classes exceeding provincial class size benchmarks
  • Projected enrolment and class organization
  • School programming and grade configuration

Our goal is to ensure students benefit from:

  • Increased teacher attention
  • Improved classroom learning environments
  • Greater support for diverse learning needs

We remain committed to supporting strong learning environments for all students and using our resources thoughtfully and strategically.

SPB Talent Show Friday, June 5, 2026

Senator Patrick Burns School Talent Show

Last Friday’s Talent Show was truly one to remember. The SPB stage came alive with a variety of performances that showcased the talent, creativity, and courage of our students. From powerful vocal performances and energetic dance routines to talented bands, piano pieces, violin solos, drumming, and original compositions, every act helped create a unique Bronco experience.

One of the most meaningful aspects of the event was the opportunity to showcase the diversity and inclusivity that make our school so special. Students from Grades 7, 8, 9, and the PLP program demonstrated that everyone has something valuable to contribute. The performances reflected the students' rich cultural backgrounds featuring songs in Japanese, a musical instrument from Iran, and a wide range of artistic expressions that highlighted the unique identities and experiences of our students.

It was inspiring to watch students support and celebrate one another, creating an atmosphere where everyone felt welcomed, valued, and encouraged to shine. This was a powerful reminder of the importance of belonging, connection, and community. Students stepped outside their comfort zones, demonstrated resilience, and shared pieces of themselves with a large audience. The positive encouragement from the audience: peers, staff, and families, helped create a safe and supportive environment where students could take risks and experience success.

It was an absolute privilege to lead and organize this event. Thank you to all our performers, volunteers, staff members, families, and supporters who helped make this event such a memorable success.

Library End of Year Message

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we approach the end of the school year, we are asking all students to return all library books. We want to ensure that our shelves are fully stocked and ready to welcome students back in the fall.

Please take a moment this week to check around the house, in backpacks, and on bookshelves for any school library books that may have been forgotten, and have your child return them as soon as possible.

Important Policy Update for Next Year:

Please be aware that students with outstanding overdue books from this school year will not be permitted to sign out new library books when the next school year begins until their accounts are cleared.

Thank you so much for your support and cooperation in helping us care for our school library resource collection!

Warm regards,
Sra. Barillas, Librarian
