SPBLearning Day

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Today, teachers across the CBE engaged in the annual Maatoomsii'Pookaiks System-wide Indigenous Education Professional Learning Day. At Senator Patrick Burns, Indigenous learning has a long tradition, and we have been lucky to have had meaningful learning shared with us by elders, knowledge keepers, teachers from across Alberta and the CBE as well as relatives of Indigenous students who attend our school. The picture above was taken in September 2022 when we had Elder Gloria start the year with us with an acknowledgement of the land, smudging and teaching around learning from the land. Teachers are required to apply foundational knowledge about First Nations, Métis and Inuit as part of their teaching quality standard and professional learning days like today support us in our learning around Indigenous education.

At SPB, we endeavour to weave Indigenous education into all subjects throughout the year, not only on specific occasions like Orange Shirt Day. Over the years, we have taken students to Nose Hill where they were taught about the importance of the land and Indigenous ways of knowing.

I want to thank all our teachers for engaging in career-long learning, especially around Indigenous education. Why don’t you ask your child what they have learned around Indigenous ways so far this year?

Wishing you all a restful weekend.

Sr. Ludwigsen, Principal
